What’s a Mezeh?

Mezeh Mediterranean grill is a fast-casual dining Mediterranean chain restaurant located all across the DMV area. I first learned of Mezeh through Yelp when I was searching for more vegan or plant-based restaurant options to add to my arsenal. I noticed right away that they had some pretty good reviews and of course some not so good ones too (but you can’t let that discourage you). Plus, their ratings ranged anywhere between 4 and 4.5 out of 5 stars depending on the location so I thought that wasn’t bad at all. The food looked decent and I was able to tell from Yelp that there were no mock meats or transitioning vegan foods served at their which was a plus. P.S. we're not a fan of mock meats ourselves but we don't judge others who do like them.

What is the ambience like?

As soon as you walk into a Mezeh, you can’t help but notice the wide-open concept. You can practically see through all the way to the kitchen where the food is being prepared. I find that to be very comforting (am I the only one that's not a fan of closed-off kitchens?).

The shelving units directly behind the ordering area are not only there for décor purposes but they also serve a functional purpose as well. Those shelving units house their spices, fermented vegetables, flours, grains and more which I find to be such a cute and sustainable set-up. The floors have a beautiful Mediterranean print filled with so many different bright and dark colors. The chairs are a rustic orange color with beautiful patterns throughout. The music is very culturally driven—I’ve never been to the Mediterranean before, but it totally gave me those vibes!

Where are they located and which location did we visit?

The good thing about Mezeh is that they have 12 locations all throughout the DMV area, and two opening soon [2019] (Bowie, MD, and Richmond, VA). A few of the more popular locations are Arlington, VA, Gaithersburg, MD, and the Annapolis, MD location. The one we visited was in Gaithersburg in a beautiful upscale neighborhood called Hunting Hill. I have to admit, it was a pretty long drive for us (about 50 minutes to be exact) from Northern, MD but it was well worth the drive. Plus, it exposed us to an area of Maryland that we have never been to before.

What about the wait times? Was it easy to order? How many toppings are you allowed?

So, when you walk up to the ordering area, you grab a paper menu and form a line, if it happens to be that busy. If not, the stars have aligned honey, and you can head straight over to the server! By the way, lunch rush for them is between 11 am and 2 pm. I was lucky enough to walk right up and order [score for zero wait time!]. And by the way, we got there just before 2 pm on a Monday.

Overall, ordering was really easy [score once again for easy ordering!]. I let the server know what my diet preferences were. I specified that I was not only vegan but that I needed every topping to be meat-free and dairy-free (I suggest you always do this at non-vegan establishments) and he was super accommodating about that. As we moved down the ordering line, I was surprised to learn that I had unlimited toppings to choose from [3 times a charm--score for unlimited toppings!]. Now obviously, as a vegan eating at a non-vegan establishment, I’m clearly not going to be adding every topping to my plate. But, again to my surprise, I was able to stack on a good 10 ya’ll! Can I get an amen for 10 whole plant-based toppings? Shoot, I can’t do that at Chipotle, that’s for sure. By the way, I’m officially done with Chipotle but let’s save that story for another post.

Let’s do the math! What would you rate Mezeh on a scale of 1 to 10? What is the quality of the produce like?

I have to say that Mezeh did their thing and continues to do their thing when it comes to quick and delicious plant-based food. For a fast-casual restaurant, they really have outdone the competition by providing good quality real food at an affordable price. How can you be mad at that?

Now, when it comes to presentation, I would give them a 7. And that's because, when it comes to fast-casual dining, food presentation is extremely low on the priority list and that's ok! The food is still made fresh daily and tastes great, it's just that they've got to keep it moving. In terms of the quality of the produce, I would give them a 7. I was able to get some insight on where they source their produce from and I was excited to learn that much of it is sourced from Belair produce--which I've heard really good things about. Belair Produce actually started out as a small produce stand in Downtown Baltimore then expanded to serving restaurants, hospitals, clubs, catering facilities, convention centers, and schools throughout the Mid-Atlantic. The only thing is, I don't know if this company provides organic produce so I will inquire about that and update you guys.

Lastly, in terms of the overall experience and taste of the food, I would give them an 8. I wish certain toppings like the Eggplant Caponata and the Steamed Beets were not served cold. That really disappointed me. And, I wish that there were more vegan dressing options--there are only two, the balsamic vinaigrette and the Tahini.  But otherwise, the food was good. I've definitely had better Meditteranean food but for a fast casual, they have got my vote.
